Daily 5
A part of our daily routine is to work on Daily 5. Each day, students choose one of the following five activities to practice independently. Each activity is designed to help students with their reading and writing. They choose one activity a day and must do each activity once throughout the week. This way, they practice and strengthen all areas. For extra practice, click on a logo running down the right hand side for fun activities to do at home!
Read to Self
Students practice reading books independently. In the classroom, they choose a spot, get started right away, use a whisper voice and read the whole time.
Listen to Reading
Students practice listening to reading in the classroom by safely getting a laptop, finding the website that they are using and then listening to reading for the entire time.
Writing
Students practice witing independently by gathering their materials, finding a spot where they can be productive and getting to work right away. After writing the entire time, they clean up their area.
Read to Someone
Students read to someone by sitting "EEKK" (elbow to elbow, knee to knee) so that both students can see the pages. They use a whisper voice when reading, stay in one spot and read the whole time.
Word Work
Students have a variety of activities to do at school when practicing word work. They can build words using magnets, letter cubes, or Cheeze-its. We also have games to play includeing "Pop" and memory. Students work on their activity the entire time and then make sure their area is tidy when they are done.
Resources
Sometimes students just need a place to begin their search for something to read, write, or share with others. A great place to start is the Winnipeg Library or the Gaynor Family LIbrary.
